Someone asked me today to tell them what I feel is the biggest difference between life before kids and life after kids. Ask a million parents this question and you’ll probably get just as many answers.
There are the obvious ones- less time to do what you want when you want, more spending, more frustration, etc…then there are the more vague ones- more love, more compassion, more fulfillment, etc…but the one people most often overlook is this:
After becoming a mother, you have a secret weapon that wasn’t in your bag before, and that is that motherhood provides the biggest opportunities for growth. Before kids, so many of us did things to evolve and become a better version of ourselves: from going to yoga to trying to eat organic foods. Learning to meditate or going to church, reading motivational books or following inspirational people on social media…but as moms, we often miss out on the biggest opportunity of all…
Motherhood provides endless opportunities to learn about yourself. Insecurities, fears, short-tempers, anxiety…it’s incredibly difficult to hide from these things once you are a parent. They relentlessly show up, over and over again…and unlike pre-k (pre-kids), it’s not so easy to distract yourself with something else.
Having children changes your life, and once a parent you can never go back to the person you were before. Life has changed, you have changed, and- if you’re willing, you’ll grow in ways you never imagined possible.
